Wachsen
2022„Wachsen“ in German means to grow and also means to cover something with wax. The work consists of a video performance and two objects. The video performance is a documentation of a six hour process where I repeatedly dip my earlobe into liquid beeswax. The two objects continue to exist as witnesses of the performance/process. The result of the work is an integration of the ritualistic aspect of craft into the work. The final work is the process itself. It builds a bridge between the craft and a performative practice. The body is used as a major tool to craft the pieces. The action of creating and the action of wearing them is one and the same. The objects emerge through the repetition of a gesture. The growth and transformation of the material by being worn on the body ends into a now unwearable result. As soon as the earrings leave the body, they turn from earrings into objects that still keep a strong reference to what they were originally. This work is a suggestion of what an individual human experience through time can be. It is a that to keep track of time in a way that is more similar to the way the earth measures time: through slow sedimentation. The objects become a time capsule.
